The history of the GMT-Master II starts with ref 16760 in 1983. It is the first GMT-Master with the ‘Coke’ bezel, sapphire glass and quickset GMT function. As a result, the new GMT-Master II was able to track three time zones simultaneously instead of the original dual time zone function. As the complexity of the movement increased, so did the size of the case. Thicker than its predecessor, the GMT-Master II also features a wider bezel and larger crown guards. These visual features earned the ref. 16760 soon a nickname ‘Fat Lady’ or ‘Sophia Loren’ (after the famous curvy Italian actress). The production of this reference was stopped in 1988.
